Must have furniture assembly tools

27/07/2023

Buying new furniture can be all fun and games until it comes to the assembly part, especially if you don’t have the right tools for the job. Have a read through our handy list of furniture assembly tools that will make the task easier.

Crosshead screwdriver

One of the most important tools you will need to assemble furniture is a cross-head screwdriver (also known as a Phillips screwdriver). You will need this to screw together furniture parts.

You can also invest in a power screwdriver if you had a shopping spree in IKEA and have a lot of furniture to assemble. This will save your wrists and get the job done quickly.

Flathead screwdriver

If you’re not opting for a power screwdriver, you will also need a flathead screwdriver to cover different screw types.

Allen keys

Allen keys are a must-have for all tool boxes and are about £5 for a set from DIY stores. They will help you tighten or loosen fasteners in the harder to reach areas.

Hammer

A hammer is another essential furniture building tool. Use this for hammering in pins to thin backings that are often used for chest of drawers, shelves, bedside tables and more.

Box cutter

A box cutter with a retractable blade will make getting into your packages much quicker and easier. Always use a sharp blade with caution and ideally wear protective gloves.

Rubber mallet

If you’re looking for tools to assemble IKEA furniture then look no further. Most furniture items from IKEA use wooden dowels, so a rubber mallet is a non-negotiable for securing the dowels without causing any damage.

Cordless drill

Power up your furniture assembly with a cordless drill that will make the whole process much quicker and easier. Always opt for a low-medium level of power though, too much pressure could damage the furniture parts for good.

Set of drill bits

Cover all bases with a good set of drill bits. You never know what screws or bolts you will be working with, so being prepared with lots of driving options makes the task at hand much smoother.

Spirit level

If you are assembling furniture that needs to be mounted to the wall, a spirit level is a must. It will ensure you mount the furniture straight and correctly.

Adjustable wrench

Some furniture assembly projects require precision, making an adjustable wrench the perfect addition to your toolbox.

Additional tools that our Taskers love

Touch-up pens

Touch-up pens are a great addition to your toolbox in case of any accidents during your furniture assembly. They effectively cover up any mishaps and are available in lots of different wood colours.

Moving blanket or dust sheet

A blanket or sheet will help to protect your floor and your furniture from scratches during the build process.

Tape measure

A tape measure is always a useful addition to any DIY project, allowing you to measure up the space and furniture parts before you get going to avoid any installation issues.

Impact driver

If you’re building big and bulky furniture then you might need a helping hand when it comes to driving in screws and bolts. An impact driver will add extra oomph to your driving power, taking the stress off your hands and speeding up the building process.

Combination pliers

Tackle any small and fiddly parts with combination pliers. They also make it easy to pull out nails and dowels.
