How to fix a squeaky door hinge

Squeaky doors usually happen when there’s not enough lubricant between the hinge and hinge pin.The rubbing together of the metal causes the squeaking sound, so to fix a squeaky door hinge quickly and easily you’ll need to apply some lubricant.

Step 1

Start by removing the pin in the door hinge. Make sure the door is closed, then wipe the hinge with a cloth to remove any dust or dirt. Use your nail and hammer to tap the pin from the bottom of the hinge so you can pull the pin out from the top. If the pin is struggling to come out, try lifting the door handle up to loosen the pressure. Only work with one pin at a time.

Step 2

Now the pin is out, it’s time to lubricate it. Petroleum jelly is a great option as it’s easy to apply, however if you haven’t got any to hand then olive oil or bar soap are effective alternatives.

If the pin itself is dusty or dirty, give it a wipe with a cloth then coat the pin with the lubricant. Add a small amount of lubricant to the top of the pin slot before inserting it back into the hinge.

Step 3

Move the door back and forth a few times to spread the lubricant around the hinge. You can also lightly wipe over the hinge with some lubricant if needed.

Step 4

Once the squeak has successfully been silenced, wipe off any excess lubricant and you’re good to go.
