If you’re like most people, you probably don’t think much about deep cleaning appliances. But the truth is, keeping them clean is vital to their longevity and performance. Since washing machine cleaning and oven cleaning are two of the most daunting appliance cleaning tasks, we’ll show you how you can either do it yourself or hire oven deep cleaning services or washing machine deep cleaning services to get the job done.
Washing Machine Deep Clean Process
It might sound counterintuitive that you would need to clean your washing machine. Still, without a thorough washing machine cleaning every 3-4 months, bacteria and mildew can grow over time, which is unsanitary and can lead to unpleasant smells.
Thankfully, scouring big appliances like the washer doesn’t have to be as difficult as it sounds. We’ll show you how to do it in less than 30 minutes with a simple vinegar solution.
Gather Supplies
The first thing you need to do is gather your supplies. You’ll need a spray bottle, a microfibre cleaning cloth, gloves, distilled white vinegar, baking soda, dishwashing soap, and bleach. Once you have everything, you’re ready to start the deep cleaning process.
Unclog and Sanitise the Drain Hose
This step will allow water to run more efficiently into your washer and clear any mildew on your drain. Turn off your water and washing machine. Locate your drain hose at the back of your washer and detach it from your washer using the appropriate tools. If you see major gunk stuck inside, you may need to use a snake to dislodge it. If not, clean around the drain hose’s opening with your spray bottle and a solution of white vinegar and water, wiping down and cleaning away any mildew.
Clean the Filter
Not all washers have filters, but you can check your owner’s manual to locate yours. Make sure your washing machine is empty and unplugged, then remove your filter and remove any small items like coins, keys, or hair. Remove other debris with a toothbrush. Soak the filter in hot water and dishwashing soap for ten minutes and replace it.
Washing Machine Deep Clean: Front-Load Washer
Using your spray bottle, spray white vinegar all around the inside of your washing machine’s drum. Scrub the washer drum thoroughly with your microfiber cloth.
The next part is essential: cleaning the door gaskets. Pull the seal creases open and get ready to find mildew, hair, lint, hair, you name it. This is why you’re cleaning! To clean this part, you’ll need some extra help. Grab some rags and soak them in bleach mixed with dish soap. Clean around the seal, then open it up and stuff the rags in. Leave them in contact with any mildew for 30 minutes before removing them.
Next, you’ll make sure your washer is ready to run. Add one cup of white vinegar to the empty drum and a few drops of lavender essential oil if you have it to make things smell extra fresh. Run your washing machine at the highest water level and hottest temperature. Run a complete cycle and enjoy a cleaned front-load washer in less than 30 minutes!
Washing Machine Deep Clean: Top-Load Washer
Start a cycle at the hottest water setting and add four cups of white vinegar. Watch the drum fill to the top. When it is full, pause the cycle so the water and vinegar solution can soak the drum. After the soak is complete, add one cup of baking soda. Allow the cycle to finish at the hottest settings. Then leave your washer open to dry!
Oven Deep Clean Process
Is cleaning the over the worst appliance scouring chore ever? We’ll try to make it a bit easier! Cleaning the oven regularly can reduce your risk of fire (built-up grease is a fire hazard), minimize your risk of food contamination, and save you from costly repair bills later on.
Gather Supplies
There are a few different oven cleaning methods—but for the method we are sharing here you’ll need the following supplies:
- Nylon pan scraper
- Metal spatula
- Dish soap
- Baking soda
- Water
- Paintbrush
- Old towel
- Kitchen gloves
- Heavy-duty scouring pads
- Microfibre clothes
- Multi-Surface cleaner
Scrub Away Surface Buildup
Use your scraper and spatula to scrape away whatever you can from inside the oven, taking care not to damage the enamel. This will make your cleaning solution much more effective later on. Hoover out the bits you’ve scraped up or sweep them away with a brush.
Apply Cleaning Solution
Mix two Tablespoons of dish soap and 1/4 cup of baking soda. Then add water until your mixture becomes a thick, syrupy texture. This is the solution you’ll use to clean your oven!
Remove your oven racks, putting them on top of an old towel inside of a bathtub and covering them generously on both sides with the cleaning solution. You can use a paintbrush to do this. Next, go back to your oven and paint the solution everywhere inside—including the glass door!
Let the solution sit for at least two hours, preferably overnight.
Oven Deep Clean Time!
After you let the solution soak in your oven, it’s time to make things sparkle. First, go to your racks in the tub and cover them with hot water.
Now go to the oven and re-wet the cleaning solution with water so you can scrape off the gunk inside the oven’s interior using a scraper and spatula. Remove as much as possible by scraping it away, then scour the rest with a scouring pad.
Don’t forget to head back to the oven racks in the tub to scrub those! Then you can add a finishing touch to everything by wiping it down with a microfibre cloth.
What About Self Cleaning Ovens?
Many ovens have a self-cleaning setting that heats your oven to about 900 degrees, melting away all the mess, so all you have to do is wipe it away with a cloth. Self-cleaning is an option; however, it can produce strong and potentially hazardous fumes. Many people report that the smell just isn’t worth it!
